SIP Droid

SIPdroid is a free softphone application for the Android operating system. It allows the device to register to up to two SIP accounts (which are not required to be on the same provider) in order to make inexpensive VoIP phone calls over a wireless broadband Internet connection.
There is no requirement that the Android device be subscribed to a cellular telephone provider.
As the Android is a smartphone platform, a 'droid running SIPdroid looks and feels like making a call on a real cellular 'phone... except for the phone bill. A call over wi-fi at voip.ms rates is almost always an order of magnitude cheaper per-minute than the full cost to make the same call on cellular voice.

Downloading SIPdroid
As of January 2014, the current SIPdroid is version 3.4 beta, free open source under the GNU Public Licence.

Configuring SIPdroid
- Start the SIP Droid Softphone
- Open the menu, then go to Sip Account
- Fill in information according to your account
- Authorization User Name: 100000 (your VoIP.ms username)
- Password: ******** (account password)
- Server: atlanta.voip.ms (one of our multiple servers)
- Optionally, up to two accounts may be configured. Any options not listed may be left at their defaults.
- Your SIP Droid should be ready to make calls
Using SIPdroid
SIPdroid is a two-line softphone which is loaded on device startup. Each virtual line appears at the upper-left corner of the system status bar as a green dot if registration with the server is successful, a yellow dot if registration is in progress or a red dot on error.
On startup, these line indicators should appear automatically and quickly turn from yellow to green. If a red dot appears, recheck that the device has an Internet connection and that the user name, password and server are specified correctly.
Pulling down the status bar will display status for each line; if you have configured more than one SIP account, the virtual line to be used for outgoing calls will appear as "Preferred" and the other line as "Click to select".
On launching the application, two icons (a keypad '5' and a 'gear') appear at the upper right; these display a telephone keypad and the setup menu respectively. Beneath these are two boxes into which a telephone number or a SIP address may be input.
If the red dot appeared, launch the application and recheck your settings in the menu.
If the green dot appears, the device is connected - launch the application and make a telephone call.
Limitations
- SIPdroid does not provide a means to configure a customised dial plan. It is therefore not possible to define a local rule to prepend your home area code to seven-digit local outbound calls or to make other common translations or substitutions.
- SIPdroid does not provide a configurable caller name for call display on outgoing calls. The numeric portion of the outbound caller ID will work, as it's added at the voip.ms servers.
- While SIPdroid is in theory able to directly call a SIP address, it treats anything which begins with a number as a regular telephone call, discarding the @domain... suffix and using the configured default server.
- The DTMF keypad may be pulled up during a call, but the tones sent are a very brief fixed length which may not suffice to operate voicemail, interactive voice response or similar remote systems.
- A bug in some older versions of SIPdroid (such as 2.7) causes the first provider or virtual "line" to be used for all outgoing calls. This has been corrected in the current version.
