VoIP.ms Glossary
ATA Analog Telephone Adaptor. Hardware device that connects the conventional telephone to the Internet through a high speed bandwidth line, provides the interface to convert the analog voice signals into IP packets, delivers dial tone and manages the call setup. (My ATA is a Cisco Linksys PAP2 )
DID Direct Inward Dialing (Number). Telephone Number used to receive incoming calls. This phone number can be called from the traditional telephone network or PSTN (any phone, mobile phone or payphone).
FOC Firm Order Confirmation. The notice issued in response to a firm order (i.e The FOC date for a DID Porting Order is 04-Aug-2011)
LEC Local Exchange Carrier. A local telephone company. ( The BIG 3 in Canada also known as robelus are Rogers, Bell, and Telus )
LNP Local number portability. Ability to transfer either an existing fixed-line or mobile telephone number assigned by a local exchange carrier (LEC) and reassign it to another carrier. (.i.e I just submitted my LNP request to transfer my current home phone number from Bell to VoIP.ms)
