Getting the device ready

• You may have to update the firmware of your phone to the latest one and/or install the latest Nokia SIP Settings Application

  The Nokia SIP Settings Application is available for download at http://www.developer.nokia.com/info/sw.nokia.com/id/d476061e-90ca-42e9-b3ea-1a852f3808ec/SIP_VoIP_Settings.html. Make sure to select version 'SIP VoIP 3.x Settings' which is the version compatible with N82.

• Some cell operators may not allow Internet calling on their devices and may have disabled some/all of the configuration settings listed below.

  This guide was tested on retail (non-branded) Nokia N82 (25.01), RM-313, firmware v 35.0.002, SIP_VoIP_3_x_Settings_v2_0_en.sis 

• If you use a hidden WiFi, i.e. the WiFi access point does not broadcast SSID, turn the SSID on temporarily.

• Make sure you can browse Internet on the phone through WiFi before you continue.

• The Toronto server was used in the configuration below. Feel free to replace it with any other VoIP.ms server.

Configuration settings

1. Create SIP profiles

• Open Menu > Settings > Connection > SIP settings

• Press soft key 'Options' and select menu item 'New SIP profile'

  Profile name:
     <A name of your choice> - for instance [email protected]
  Service profile:
     IETF
  Default access point:
     <Select a WiFi access point>
  Public user name:
     sip:<voip.ms Account ID>[_<Subaccount ID>]@toronto.voip.ms
  Use compression:
     No
  Registration:
     When needed = manual login
     Always on = automatic login
  Use security:
     No

  Proxy server...
     I did not need a proxy server

  Registrar server...

  Registrar server address:
     sip:toronto.voip.ms
  Realm:
     toronto.voip.ms
  User name:
     <voip.ms Account ID>[_<Subaccount ID>]
  Password:
     <[Sub]account Password>
  Transport type:
     Auto
  Port:
     5060

• Press soft key 'Back'

• If needed create more profiles - i.e. one for each voip.ms server you will be using. You can copy the settings from an existing profile but will have to modify the profile name, public user name, and the registrar server address and realm.

• To select a Default profile, press soft key 'Options' and select menu item 'Default profile'. If it is an "Always on" profile the device will attempt to sign on to the server. If successful, the text 'Registered' will appear under the profile name. Also, the Internet Telephone icon will appear at the top-right corner of the screen - a handset & globe icon.

2. Create Internet Telephone profiles

• You need to create at least one Internet Telephone profile

• Open Menu > Settings > Connection > Internet tel. to modify / create profiles

  Name:
     <A name of your choice> - for instance voip.ms
  SIP profiles:
     <Select one of the SIP profiles you just created>

• If you created only one Internet Telephone profile for voip.ms then you will need to modify it every time you want to connect to another server (SIP profile). Alternatively, you can create several Internet Telephone profiles - Main, Backup, Europe...

3. Enable the Internet Telephone service

• Open Menu > Tools > Connectivity > Internet tel.

• You should see a list of available WiFi networks. A gold star will be displayed next to each network associated with a SIP profile. To start/stop the Internet Telephone service, select a marked with a star WiFi networks and press 'D-pad Select'.

• If you have configured several Internet Telephone profiles, you can select the default one by pressing soft key 'Options' and selecting menu item 'Change service'

• To modify the Internet Telephone service settings, press soft key 'Options' and select menu item 'Settings'

4. Optional settings

• Open Menu > Settings > Phone > Call to access the following settings

  Send my Internet call ID
  Internet call waiting
  Internet call alert
  Default call type

• Open Menu > Settings > Phone > Call barring > Internet call barring to access the following settings

  Anonymous call barring

Test call

You should see both a WiFi and a handset & globe icon displayed on the device screen once the Internet Telephone service has been started. Try placing a test call to 4443, the voip.ms echo test line.
